On Thursday, Oct. 28, 2024, Tyler, The Creator dropped a new album titled “CROMAKOPIA”. The album was released at 3:00 p.m Pacific Time. The 14-track album features artists ranging from GloRilla and Sexxy Red to Teezo Touchdown and Schoolboy Q. Already breaking records, CROMAKOPIA has reached over 85 million first time streams on Spotify.
The first track on the album, “St. Chroma”, is speculated to be Tyler, The Creator’s alter ego. St. Chroma is adapted from Chroma the Great of The Phantom Tollbooth, a novel by Norton Juster. Chroma the Great’s job is to play instruments that color the sky. Listeners and fans of the album speculate that Tyler is relating himself to Chroma the Great, seeing both of their jobs as providing color to the world.
“Rah Tah Tah”, the next song on the album, is displayed as cocky and superficial. A line in the song says, “I could never ride no Hellcat,” stating it “don’t cost enough.” Throughout the song, he is talking about his fame and fortune over others. The song is energetic and has an intense flow consistently while talking of the facade he puts up as a celebrity.
“Noid”, short for paranoid, tears down the story that “Rah Tah Tah” sets up. The longest song in the album, it talks about how there is a downside to all of the fame and fortune that comes with his career. Multiple times in the song, Tyler mentions how he is worried that his neighbors want him dead, or states that he “can’t even buy a home in private,” and he is “triple checking if I locked the door.” Though he is famous and rich, he is constantly worried about what could happen to him.
“Darling, I” is a song that is different from the others so far. It talks about how Tyler is unwanting of monogamy and how he never says he loves someone unless he means it. The song further takes down the mask that Tyler talks about that he carefully built. It explores Tyler’s commitment issues as well as his acknowledgement that he must get over them to function as an adult.
With strong vocals and lyrical genius that leaves listeners wondering, “CHROMAKOPIA” is an album with amazing background and storylines.
