In California, at Bethesda Game Studios’ E3 conference back on June 10, Todd Howard, the director and executive producer at Bethesda, announced a new addition to the Fallout Franchise, “Fallout 76.” The game is scheduled for release on Nov. 14, 2018.

Some fans are skeptical of the game being “entirely online,” whereas all other Fallout games up to this point have been single player.

“You can’t have a genuine Fallout game, while it also being fun and fair, as a multiplayer game,” East senior Parker Hays, an avid Fallout fan of five years, said.

Many players enjoy Fallout for the single player experience and being able to make their own decisions that have an impact on the storyline. With “Fallout 76” being completely online, players won’t have that feeling of independence and depth.

“Fallout has always been an atompunk, harsh post-apocalyptic RPG with heavy emphasis on story” said Hays. “Ever since Bethesda Game Studios inherited the rights for the game from the now defunct Black Isles Games, they have failed somewhat in keeping this theme, but ‘Fallout 76’ is the biggest example so far.”

Howard has said that players will be able to play through the full game alone, but it would be easier with a team. Howard has yet to release more details, leaving some confused by his conflicting statements. This confusion has created questions on the subject of solo play. Will solo players have to play on a private server? Will players that are playing solo be able to have the full experience?

Some fans even theorized that Bethesda would convert from single player games to multiplayer games for good. However, to many fans’ relief, Howard shut down that rumor in a recent interview with GameStar on the topic of upcoming games.

“For those games, we want to keep them as single player, that is what our focus is going to be,” said Howard.
