On Saturday, Jan. 8, the Lincoln Southwest Speech team went to Millard North High School. Out of 19 participants, senior Kevin Amaro was the only Silver Hawk who went to finals and placed first in Humorous Interpretation.

On Saturday, Jan. 15, the speech competition was at Raymond Central High School. Twenty LSW participants went and senior Amelia Schwensen placed first in Extemporaneous Speaking.

“For me and past events, I think I did a lot better [at Raymond Central] because I practiced a lot more,” freshman Sandarika Warjri said. “That definitely helped me with my confidence.”

Winter Break allowed for more practice and preparation for January.

“I feel like we’re on the right trajectory at this point,” coach Matthew Heimes said. “We’ve been doing a little bit better each week.”

This week’s speech competition will be at Southwest on Saturday, Jan. 22. The speech students will start setting up at 7:00 a.m. and help run the concessions until 5:00 p.m. Students will also help guide competitors to their rounds and help hand out awards at the end.
