Project David is a community service organization of about 15 volunteers that functions based on donations of goods and the volunteers’ time. It is headed by Mr. Dennis Hershberger and Mrs. Lisa Bales. They meet during PLC time once a month and focus their service on low-income elementary schools.

“Project David is a group that formed in memory and honoring a former student who was very big into paying it forward and volunteering and just being involved in all sorts of things,” Mrs. Bales said. “Mr. Hershberger and I created this in his memory to get current students to continue his mission of doing things to help others.”

The group started as a way to remember David Munro, a former LSW student who, despite living with a heart condition, spent most of his time in service to others. Munro graduated from LSW in 2012. He passed away in 2018.

Today, many of the volunteers participate because they want to give back to their community.

“One of my favorite teachers, Mr. Hershberger asked me if I wanted to join,” sophomore Sophie Johnson said. “I just said sure because it’s helping people and why wouldn’t you want to help anyone with your friends.”

Their fourth quarter project is going to be assisting in the spring cleaning and repainting of the benches outside of Lakeview Elementary. Lakeview is a Title 1 school, which means that it receives government aid because over 50% of enrolled families fall below the poverty line.

Any students wishing to join the group or make donations can contact Bales or Hershberger in the A100 TPC.
