Summer legion tryouts took place on Monday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 17 at the Lincoln Southwest baseball field. Any interested 10th and 11th graders had tryouts both days from 3:30 p.m.- 5:30 p.m. Any interested 8th graders and 9th graders had tryouts following the sophomores and juniors.

Southwest legion teams are split amongst three teams. The sponsor for the reserve team is Remax, the JV sponsor is Cornhusker Heating and Air, and the varsity team is sponsored by Pinnacle Bank.

The JV and varsity team can hold up to 18 players while the reserve team does not have a specific limit.

“We are going to be a young team this year. I think we have nine sophomores,” sophomore Alex Wenta said. “ We are going to put the spring season behind us since we didn’t have the outcome we wanted. I think the warm weather should help us this summer.”

The JV and varsity team can hold up to 18 players while the reserve team does not have a specific limit.

“I’ve always been nervous going into tryouts so I just went and kept focused,” sophomore Kale Henn said. “ I think that we are a good team and we already have a lot of chemistry considering most of us have played together for at least a year.”

The first varsity game of the summer is Tuesday, May 24 in Beatrice at 7:30 p.m. The game will follow the JV game which starts at 5:00 p.m.

“I want to see how our guys bounce back after not making it to the State Tournament. However, I think there were a lot of positives to draw upon. We had a lot of young guys step up as leaders and play big roles,” varsity coach Mitch Vernon said. “ Everything about summer ball is better. It is always awesome weather even when it is smoking hot. The ability to travel is really awesome for team chemistry and fun experiences away from the baseball field.”
