Splashing Back Into the Season

On Monday, Nov. 12, the swim season for Lincoln Southwest will be starting back up. With tryouts taking place Nov. 12-16. Tryouts Will be at Southwest’s pool. The pool is located on the West side of the school down by the practice gym.

For the first week of practice, the team will be getting the athletes adjusted to Southwest’s practices. Coaches will get a feel of the team and skill levels of the swimmers. After the week is over, coaches will work on placing kids on JV or varsity.

“I am hoping to make Varsity this year,” freshman Louis Antinoro said. “I have been swimming on a club team for three plus years and I want to know that my work has paid off.”

If students are previous swimmers or have made conference and or state in the past they will start out practicing with Varsity. If students have never swam before or were on JV last year they will start with JV. Within the week, it will be determined if they stay on JV or get moved to Varsity.

Part of the tryout week will be time trials. Swimmers will have to swim a 50-meter (down and back) of each of the strokes. They then will do the same thing but with a 100-meter swim of each of the strokes.

Getting back into the season is something that can be exciting yet stressful for the athletes.

“I am super excited to get back into the season and see all of my friends,” junior Jacob Sprague said. “ I also am getting stressed because I have to start making sure my school is well balanced with swim.”

After losing a lot of talent last year the coaches are excited to see the new talent from the swimmers returning and joining.

“I am excited to see the improvement from returning swimmers and the ability of the new ones,” Coach Leigh Ann Fetter-Witt said. “It’ll be fun to see how this new team comes together to achieve success. This year we have a young squad and I think they will be able to surprise themselves and others.”
