On Thursday Feb. 3, Lincoln Southwest High School will host a blood drive from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Because of COVID, the blood drive will take place in a donation van, by the theatre doors near the back of the school.

COVID-19 is causing a shortage of blood throughout the U.S. According to 3 News Now, the Nebraska Community Blood Bank continues to face a shortage of blood donations in the pandemic. The blood donations will greatly help the community of Lincoln by giving the blood to people in need.

“I find it rewarding and I know that we’re helping to save lives and that’s very important,” blood drive director, Mr. Mark Watt said.“I think it’s good to encourage high school kids to volunteer and develop that spirit.”

The average amount of blood collected per drive is 30 – 40 units (pints). In order to donate, students need to be 16. Their iron levels will be checked to see if they are high enough and there is also a weight limit to make sure it’s safe to donate.

“I donated blood at the beginning of the school year, and this will be my second time,” sophomore Bree Farley said. “I was nervous at first, but it’s not bad.”
