On Thursday, April 14, Southwest’s National Honor Society (NHS) will partner with Hive Helpers to create crafts with wildflower seeds.

“Each NHS member completes an individual service project throughout the course of their senior year,” NHS sponsor Amy Derowitsch said. “Students have lots of autonomy on what they want to do for their project.”

Seniors Avery Florea and Caiya Khammaly decided to partner with Hive Helpers as part of their service project in NHS.

“I want to bring more attention to the environmental club, Hive Helpers, since a lot of people don’t know about it,” Florea said. “It was a fun way that I could partner up with someone else in NHS and just bring more awareness to the club.”

Florea and Khammaly plan to make seed bombs with everyone involved. After making the seed bombs, students are welcome to take them home to plant in their yards to promote native flowers and create habitats for bees. Some of the native seeds will also be spread behind Southwest where the natural grasslands are.

NHS plans on doing other service projects throughout the year including making May Day baskets and working in the memorial garden this spring.
