Lincoln Southwest boys varsity basketball looks to go 2-0 against Fremont this season when the team faces the Tigers on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020 at Fremont High School with tip off at 7:30 p.m.

The last time the Hawks and Tigers faced off on December 27, 2019, LSW drove home victorious 81-55 in a dominant performance. Southwest will be looking to repeat this result to improve their 4-8 record.

“I think getting out in transition and pushing it ahead will be important [against Fremont],” said senior forward Brayton Christensen, who had a team high 16 points in the Silver Hawks previous match up with the Tigers. “They can score a lot… so if we play good defense I think we’ll be successful.”

In addition, freshman guard, Rylan Smith, will also be looking to post a performance similar to his last outing against Fremont. Smith had a career high 14 points against the Tigers, a rare stat line out of any freshman in a varsity basketball game, but even rarer in Nebraska Class A Boys basketball.

“I think as a team that night [the last time LSW played Fremont] we came out really aggressive,” said Smith. “I think that really got the team going, which I think that really got me going too.”

However, this season has not been without new learning experiences and adjustments for Smith by moving from 8th grade to Class A varsity basketball.

“The speed [of the game] really changes, you gotta get used to the speed,” said Smith. “And also the physicality of the game, it is a lot different.”

This game will be following a 57-70 loss to Grand Island on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, for Southwest. Furthermore, this game was rescheduled from Friday, January 17, to Thursday, Jan. 16 due to weather concerns Friday. This results in less time for both teams to prepare for the game.
